Exfoliative cheilitis and burning mouth syndrome: Epical fail in Swedish healthcare
HI!
So, after months of suffering from exfoliative cheilitis (chronic peeling and cracking of the lips) and burning mouth syndrome I finally decided to give the doctor a try again in August. This time I wanted to have a skin specialist. I had to wait all the way to last week, 7th of December, because they are so busy.
The skin specialist took a peek at my lips and shone a light inside my mouth, told me everything looked just fine, and that my problem is called exfoliative cheilitis (as if I did not know) and that they basically were "out-treated". They had made a culture of my tongue which showed nothing, tried with antibiotics and fungicide, and tested my blood for vitamin deficiency, all to no avail. I have also had spontaneous nose bleeds the last few weeks, to which she not reacted at all but just shrugged her shoulders, and a rash all over my face combined with keratinous scales on my skin similar to the lips. But since it was gone by the time I visited the doctor she only shrugged again when I told her, said that exf.ch. is extremely difficult to treat, and sent me out the door within 10 minutes total. I had to pay about $30 for that too. I just hate Swedish healthcare. Now, to be honest, I have had some good experiences too, but that is when you get to a specialist. Going to "vårdcentralen" is mostly a waste of time. They'll just tell you to come back in 4 months if you haven't died. The trick is in being persistent enough to let them remiss you to a specialist.
So now I basically wake up every day with hard lips which peel in the course of the day or sometimes not before evening, and if I don't mess with it, I don't get irritated skin around the mouth. I use Decubal salve for very dry lips a couple of times a day (I need to use a moisturizer, otherwise my lips crack and bleed) and the antibiotic and fungicide that I have left I use once a day. The problem is under control in the sense that no one sees it. Although I sometimes use foundation, I do not need it anymore to cover the red skin/keratinous scales, haven't had those in a while, and I think using make-up makes it worse when it does appear. The burning mouth syndrome is the same. Nothing helps. Currently I have a cold as well so a sore throat and runny nose added to the mess. ****!
Are you surprised that I have not exercised anything for two weeks? Feeling miserable and tired of it all.
Hope you are faring better.
