Splitting nails
Hi!
My yoga programme is still going strong. Doing 10-15 minutes first thing every morning really gets my energy levels up and my stress levels down.
I wanted to take up another health problem. I have at times split nails, mostly the thumbs, and although it is a relatively small problem it can be very painful during a few days. I have done some research online; it is called onychoschizia and apparently it is very seldom due to a vitamin deficiency. If you have split nails on both hands and feet then it might be indicative of this. I do have two permanently split toe nails, but they are the second toes. They are the longest and therefore often the ones that I hit and they have the most pressure inside shoes. Therefore I think that with the toes it is a mechanical problem.
Not only do the nails split (both vertically but also horizontally) but the skin in the corners sometimes also splits and this is also very painful. With the vertically split nails it is very painful when it gets caught in your clothing and splits open even further.
I do use gloves when cleaning and I do not use chemicals or such, as is also pinpointed as a cause: exposure to water and strong chemicals.
It is recommended to use paraffin and mineral oil and lanolin. Also the benefits of Vitamin E oil are extolled online. For the last few days I have been continually smearing lanolin on all nails, not just the affected thumbs, and also using a special nail oil. It has helped: on one thumb the split skin has healed and the vertical split is almost gone. On the right thumb the split in the skin is still there but is not open anymore; the vertical split is almost gone as well. The other nails are ok, currently all are cut very short. I hope they will grow out well.
I wonder if it is connected to the exfoliative cheilitis. I have a very healthy diet with lots of fruit and vegetables, but I take a vitamin supplement anyway because of these problems. If you have anything to add on this subject please contact me!
